Reporting Services Print Provider Performance issues...

Added by Jason Offutt 10 months ago

Hey guys n gals,

We're getting a few reports of performance issues regarding the Reporting Services Print Provider for the check-in system. We'd like to get as much information as possible so we can address it (whether it's a configuration issue on servers/kiosks, or something that we need to fix in the source code).

Could you please give us some information on how your kiosks are set up?

  • What kind of hardware are you using (printer name/model, any print servers, etc).
  • Where are your printers defined (on the kiosk, or on the server)?
  • How is Arena talking to your printers (networked print servers, print shares from the kiosk, etc)?

Please give us as much information as possible, so we can help address any issues you might be having.

Thanks a bunch!

Just for my reference/clarification, is this an actual performance issue you are hearing about (such as taking a long time to print) or issues with it just not printing and giving print errors? The latter should mostly(hopefully all) be fixed in the 1.3.1 patch we did, the former I haven't really heard much about. Just wanting to be sure we are on the same page.

It seems isolated to print times and performance of printing while using the RS provider.

Northside Christian Church (New Albany, IN)
iPad v1.0
Zebra 420d Ethernet version
Printers installed on Arena IIS Server
SQL2005

Takes anywhere from 2-10 seconds depending on how much God wishes to bless us that day...
Our RS label is a two-page label on 3x2 labels.

Hope this is what you need.

CheckinWizard v1.3.1
iPad v1.0
Zebra GK420D connected via USB to an Airport Express
Printers set up on our server as Shared Network Printers
The printers are set at the Kiosk with Locations and Attendance Labels pointing to the Kiosk printer

Arena v 2011.1.200.12401
Micorsoft SQL Server 2008 R2

Right now we are at about 10 to 15 seconds to print 3 labels for one checkin.

Central Christian Church (aka CCCEV) two configurations:

#1 CheckinWizard v1.3.1 w/ CCCEV Print Label Provider
ELO TouchSystem kiosk
Zebra LP2824 printers ALL are defined locally to IIS/Arena (NOT shared) using Seagull Scientific drivers:
Product: Zebra EPL Driver
Version: 7.1.6
Printer Options set at 3.5 in/sec
Connected physically to network using both ZebraNet Print Server II and integrated 10Base-T NIC

Most Locations are set to print to location's defined printer while some Locations are set to print at [Kiosk] using Kiosk's defined printer.
1-2 seconds to start printing, additional 2-3 seconds to complete 3 labels. (watch video - this is from our remote campus using 3G Sprint network to connect back to our main campus network as mentioned in my blog post)

#2 CheckinWizard v1.3.1 w/ CCCEV RS Print Label Provider (Reporting Services labels)
iPad v1.0
Zebra LP2824 printers ALL are defined locally to IIS/Arena (NOT shared) using Seagull Scientific drivers:
Product: Zebra EPL Driver
Version: 7.1.6
Printer Options set at 3.5 in/sec
Connected physically to network using both ZebraNet Print Server II and integrated 10Base-T NIC
All Locations are set to print to location's defined printer.
1-2 seconds to start and finish 1 label. (watch video)

Arena v 2010.1.410
MSSQL Server 2005 R2

For those of you with print performance issues, can you clarify if it is only on the first family checking in, or for all families? (i.e. for us the first check-in of the day prints in about 10 seconds, every print after that is about 1-2 seconds).

CheckinWizard v.1.3.1 w/ RS Print Label Provider
Mac Mini Intel
Zebra GK420d w/ Ethernet, all printers defined locally to IIS/Arena using Zebra drivers
Printer Options set to 5/sec, Printer Port set to NOT use bidirectional support (I had to turn off bidirectional at one point in time to solve a problem)
Connected physically to network w/ built-in print server.
All labels are set to print to kiosk's default printer
1-2 seconds to start and finish first label.

Arena v 2010.2.300
SQL Server 2008

In our case it's not just the first family, it's consistently every label at about 3 seconds per label.

We've figured out our issue with the slow printing using iPad's and printers hooked up to an Airport Express. The problem was a bad Airport Express. Once we switched it out to a new Airport Express on our testing kiosk, our printing speed is now where it should be. Thanks everyone for your help and support.

Nick encouraged me to post this problem here.

Here's a new issue we are facing. See my post above about our set up.

We are checking in with iPads printing to Airport Express' with a Zebra LP 2844 Z hooked up via USB. The CheckinWizard module is using the RS Print Provider. When we run a check in there is a 10-15 second pause between labels being printed. Our WiFi network is encrypted (WPA)

Now, if we switch to using the non-RS print provider in the module. The labels print quickly, one after the other.

We've tested different drivers, and driver settings such as turning off bidirectional printing.

When we hooked the LP 2844 Z up directly to the server it prints just fine, really fast.

In addition we print fast to the Zebra GK420d, and the Zebra QL320Plus. This made us think it could be a firmware issue so we upgraded that with no increased results.

Daniel asked about the timing when printing multiple kids at one check-in. I checked in 2 children and after the first label printed there was a consistent 10 second pause between each label printed.
